IPO Seminar 2014 : Stairway to Listing Drew in 150 SMEs

A total of 150 Bumiputera-led SMEs attended the Initial Public Offering (IPO) Seminar held at SME Corp. Malaysia on 24 March 2014. The seminar, organised by SME Corp. Malaysia in collaboration with Bursa Malaysia, MIDF Investment Bank Berhad, the Bumiputera Agenda Coordinating Unit (TERAJU), and Cradle Sdn. Bhd., and was officiated by YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI).

The seminar is was aimed at enabling SMEs to obtain a better understanding of the procedures and processes involved in Bursa Malaysia stock market listing exercise, as well as, providing information on the benefits and advantages of public listing. The objective of seminar was also to enhance the collaboration between the public and private sectors in developing competitive SMEs especially Bumiputera-led companies through public listing on Bursa Malaysia.

YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa in his speech during the Dialogue Session emphasised that “In a world where the costs and risks of catering to the SMEs are perceived to be too high by commercial financial authorities, and the micro-finance loans are too small to meet the capital requirements of the SMEs; listing could prove to be a boon, and a solution to mitigate barriers to investor interest in our SMEs and their growth.”

The participants who attended the seminar included past and present winners of the Enterprise 50 (E50) Award, four stars and above companies rated under the SME Competitive Rating for Enhancement (SCORE), recipients of 1-InnoCERT and National Mark of Malaysia Brand, SMEs from the Skim Jejak Jaya Bumiputera (SJJB) under TERAJU, as well as, companies that had participated in the Coach and Grow Program under Cradle Fund Sdn. Bhd. Since the inaugural IPO Seminar in 2011, to-date 12 companies have been selected to attend Listing Clinics organised by Bursa Malaysia, enabling them to have the opportunity to expand, to promote their products and services through greater media coverage, as well as, to improve their business management, financial and operating systems.

The seminar had featured discussions on available options for entry into Bursa Malaysia, as well as, the processes and criteria for listing. Apart from that, representatives from MIDF Investment Bank Berhad, BDO Malaysia, Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill, and Probe Research had shared their views and insights on various issues related to listing. Prestariang Berhad, a listed company, was also present to share its listing experience and to provide a glimpse of its accomplishments as a public listed company.
