Business Matching Exceeded Target

After the excitement and flurry of activities in the last 3 days of 4- 6 June, we came to the conclusion of the SME Annual Showcase - SMIDEX 2014. Again, this year, SMIDEX 2014 had marked yet another milestone in the history of the nation’s premier signature SME event.

SMIDEX has again proven to be the best platform for Malaysian SMEs to showcase their capabilities and capacities in offering products, services and technologies for the global market. It has also proven to be an excellent avenue for SMEs to network and forge strategic business linkages with large companies, multinational corporations (MNCs), Government-linked companies (GLCs), as well as foreign companies.

One of the key highlights of SMIDEX is the Business Matching Sessions or Linkages. This year, a total of 261 business matching sessions were materialized between SMEs and their potential business partners whereby RM373.43 million (approximately USD116.13 million) of potential sales had been successfully negotiated. It is interesting to note that the participation in Business Matching this year comprised of a good blend of large companies, MNCs and GLCs from diverse industries including Aerospace, Automotive and Hypermarkets.

With over 10,000 expected visitors and 369 exhibition booths, SMIDEX 2014 provided a unique opportunity for SMEs to reinvent their business potential, deploy innovation and creativity for new growth, pursue excellence and sustainable solutions and emerge as global champions. Visitors had the opportunity to visit the booths of more than 300 participating companies from the Government and Corporate sectors, as well as, foreign companies. The International Pavilion recorded a 40% increase in terms of the participation of foreign companies, from 55 companies in 2013 to 74 companies in 2014.

This year, too, we had ventured further into introducing wider international linkages as shown by the participation of SMEs from Iran, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Oman, the Philippines, the UK, and the US. These International SMEs were mainly from the Aerospace, Machinery and Engineering, Food and Beverages (F&B), as well as, Agro-Based industry sectors.

As part of the continuing collaboration between SME Corp. Malaysia and BAE Systems, 13 UK SMEs had specifically met directly with 21 Malaysian SMEs. A total of RM41.28 million in potential sales were generated from 36 sessions conducted between them.

Ten (10) industry sectors participated in this year’s Business Matching - namely Aerospace; Chemical and Petrochemical; ICT; Machinery & Engineering; Automotive; Electrical & Electronic; Services; Pharmaceutical; Ship Building & Repair and Others. The Top Three (3) industry sectors with the highest potential sales value were Ship Building/Ship Repair (High Technology Sectors) with RM 288.5 million (or 61.19%); SSL/LED (High Technology Sectors) with RM 21.06 million (or 5.6%); and Distributive Trade with RM18.6 million in potential sales (or 4.98%). Those negotiations involved a number of 101 SMEs and 36 MNCs/GLCs/LSIs. In addition, the business matching sessions also provided excess to financing, amounting to RM120 Million.

SMIDEX 2014 had indeed achieved its goal in providing a world-class networking platform empowering both our SME Communities and global participants with functional knowledge and business opportunities that set new benchmarks for business progress on a global scale. It had also accomplished its aim in gaining international recognition as a significant trade event for SMEs.
