The much-awaited and prestigious international event - the 4th Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) 2013, was held in Kuala Lumpur on 11th and 12th October 2013, and had successfully drew local, regional and global business communities and networks to Malaysia, opening up new opportunities for learning and growth.

First launched and hosted in 2010 by President Barack Obama in Washington DC, the Summit is a global platform to empower entrepreneurs with the skills and resources necessary to compete and thrive in the 21st century. This year, GES 2013 was officiated by Y.A.B. Dato’ Sri Mohd. Najib Tun Haji Abdul Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

Global stakeholders and top industry players represented by leading business leaders, high-level government officials, investors, policy makers, regulators, venture capitalists, SMEs, researchers, international speakers and successful entrepreneurs had convened to share their ideas and best practices, discuss, debate and develop solutions for some of the most intractable issues that prevent the growth of entrepreneurship and business with the world’s entrepreneurial community.

The first in East Asia, the Summit played a significant role in advancing entrepreneurship and prosperity within the Muslim world in the global economy. It had given Malaysia an opportunity, as one of the fast developing economies to not only share its capabilities towards global competitiveness but to also embrace cross-border partnerships and transform its local markets into grounds for international trade.

GES 2013 successfully attracted more than 3,000 participants from more than 50 countries. It was indeed a platform for budding entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services, gain a window or access to regional and international networks, and above all, enhance their brand presence.

Themed “Empowering and Connecting Entrepreneurs”, the Summit covered 4 distinct tracks that included Building an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem; Creating Tomorrow’s Game-Changers; Emerging Trends in the Start-up Scene with Special Focus on Asia; and Connecting Growth.

Among the topics that were covered included Innovative Business Models; Disruptive Innovation; The Maker Movement; Digital Entrepreneurship; Finding Innovative Funding; Ways to Develop and Retain Talent; and Taking Start-ups Global. The Summit had provided extensive networking opportunities that gave participants new perspectives and new profit opportunities.
