KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 20 companies have been granted nearly RM1.5 million through the Indian Business Accelerator Programme (I-BAP), an SME Corporation Malaysia (SME Corp) initiative designed to support small businesses owned by Indian entrepreneurs in Malaysia.

The I-BAP programme, managed by the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development (Kuskop), offers matching grants of up to RM100,000, to help Indian-owned small businesses improve their capacity, capability, and business performance.

Deputy Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said that this group of recipients is the first batch after the application period closed on October 31.

"The approved financial assistance amounts to RM6 million, but the applications we received totalled almost RM26.14 million.

"For the coming year, I will discuss with Kuskop Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick and SME Corp's chief executive office Rizal Nainy, and bring the matter to the prime minister to seek a larger allocation for I-BAP," he told reporters at the presentation of offer letters to the first group of 20 I-BAP recipients here today.

Ramanan, who announced the I-BAP programme on Sept 27, also said that 61 more applications are still under evaluation, bringing the total number of small businesses owned by Indian entrepreneurs expected to receive financial assistance to over 70.

He said the grants cover expenses for purchasing machinery and equipment to improve product quality, as well as for boosting productivity and manufacturing efficiency.

Other areas include the adoption of information and communication technology (ICT) and e-commerce, the implementation of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices, product certification, and the execution of marketing and promotional activities.

"The specific allocation for Indian entrepreneurs through I-BAP demonstrates the government's commitment and seriousness in enhancing the development of the Indian community in line with the Madani Economic Framework, which aims for a more equitable and inclusive national economic growth.

"With the assistance received, I hope that Indian entrepreneurs can improve efficiency and productivity to increase sales and business profits," Ramanan added.

One of the grant recipients, R. Abiramee, 42, said she received RM62,000 to purchase and repair a fresh milk-based ice cream machine, which she has been operating for over a year in a factory in Shah Alam, Selangor.

"Previously, we imported ice cream from India, but now we make it ourselves in Malaysia.

"After attending training at SME Corp, I gained a lot of valuable information, and I decided to apply for this assistance when the applications opened in October this year," she said. – Bernama

SME CEO Forum 2024: Empowering Innovation in Malaysia’s Industrial Renaissance https://smecorp.gov.my/index.php/en/resources/2015-12-21-10-55-22/news/5014-sme-ceo-forum-2024-empowering-innovation-in-malaysia-s-industrial-renaissance https://smecorp.gov.my/index.php/en/resources/2015-12-21-10-55-22/news/5014-sme-ceo-forum-2024-empowering-innovation-in-malaysia-s-industrial-renaissance N1

The Small and Medium Enterprises Association of Malaysia (SAMENTA) recently hosted the much-anticipated SME CEO Forum 2024, a premier annual gathering for Malaysia’s leading business figures, entrepreneurs, and industry experts.

This year’s theme, Industrial Renaissance – Empowering Innovation, Deepening Complexity, focused on the transformative potential of industrial innovation and strategies to navigate today’s increasingly complex landscape.

The forum, officiated by the guest of honour, SME Corp chairman Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, comes at a crucial time as Malaysia aims to sharpen its competitive edge in the global market by embracing technology, sustainability, and human-centred innovation.

N2

It attracted close to 1,000 participants who engaged in insightful sessions exploring how SMEs can thrive amid rapid technological advancements and heightened regulatory demands.

A Call to Embrace Innovation

The forum commenced with a keynote address by SAMENTA’s national president, Datuk William Ng, who underscored the importance of innovation as the lifeline for SMEs facing economic uncertainty and increased global competition.

Ng highlighted that while SMEs form the backbone of Malaysia’s economy—contributing nearly 40% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP)—they need to prioritise technological adoption to remain competitive. He encouraged SMEs to view the industrial renaissance as an opportunity to rethink processes, deepen skill sets, and harness emerging technologies.

“Malaysia’s SMEs must embrace this renaissance not as a threat, but as a significant opportunity to reimagine their role in the regional economy,” said Ng. He elaborated that the journey to embracing innovation requires resilience, adaptability, and the willingness to tackle complex challenges.

Panel Discussion: New Industrial Plan – How Can SMEs Capture These Opportunities?

The first panel with the topic of New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) – Industrial Transformation for SMEs, featured Yeoh Seng Hooi, SAMENTA Secretary General; Rizal Nainy, SME Corp CEO; Datuk Hanafi Sakri, Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) deputy secretary general (Industry); and Malaysia Productivity Corporation deputy director general, Dr Norjayadi Tamam.

The session addressed the immense potential of the recently introduced Industrial Plan to reshape Malaysia’s industrial landscape and provide opportunities for SMEs to play a central role in that plan.

Yeoh emphasised that Malaysia’s SMEs must be proactive in aligning their business models with the new plan, which focuses on sectors such as advanced manufacturing, green technology, and digitalisation.

He highlighted that the plan represents a framework to help SMEs expand their operational capabilities, adopt cleaner production methods, and contribute to sustainable development.

At the same time, Rizal elaborated on SME Corp’s initiatives to support these goals, including targeted grants, digitalisation incentives, and capacity-building programmes aimed at empowering SMEs to adopt transformative technologies.

Additionally, Hanafi highlighted the role of government in creating a conducive environment for SMEs, focusing on policy frameworks that promote innovation, ease regulatory burdens, and encourage foreign investment.

Meanwhile, Dr Norjayadi Tamam spoke on productivity-driven growth, emphasising that SMEs should adopt continuous improvement practices and seek greater efficiencies in their operations.

He encouraged business leaders to invest in workforce training and productivity-enhancing tools to compete effectively on a global scale.

In this session, panelists explored their journey to taking their SMEs public. They also gave insights into IPO preparation, valuation techniques, investor relations, and regulatory compliance to uncover the benefits and challenges of this transformative step for an SME.

Panel Discussions: No Holds Barred

The SME CEO Forum 2024 also had an open and unrestricted debate between policymakers and SMEs in this special session titled No Holds Barred – Policymakers vs SMEs. The panel members were Member of Parliament (MP) for Machang, Kelantan, Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal, Wong Shu Qi, MP for Kluang and Talentcorp chairman, and Williams Business Consultancy Sdn Bhd economist, founder and director, Prof Dr Geoffrey Williams.

In this dicussion, panelists dived deep into the challenges and conflicts that arise when government regulations, policies, and initiatives are confronted by the needs, concerns, and perspectives of SMEs.

They delved into how these interactions shape the business environment, influence decision-making, and impact the growth and sustainability of SMEs in a competitive market.

The forum also featured the latest advancements in AI designed for SMEs. Exhibitors displayed cutting-edge solutions tailored to help SMEs modernise their operations and improve productivity.

Among the most talked-about innovations showcased to the participants were Jabra’s cutting-edge solutions feature innovative AI-powered experiences, including the new Intelligent Meeting Space feature, underscoring the transformative impact of adopting new technologies to enhance Malaysia’s industrial capabilities.

The Path Forward

The SME CEO Forum 2024 concluded with a call to action for all attendees. As Malaysia continues its journey through the industrial renaissance, SMEs must play an active role in embracing innovation and managing the complexities that come with it.

For many Malaysian SMEs, the message from this year’s forum was clear: innovation and complexity should not deter them, but drive them forward. The success stories and strategies shared served as both inspiration and a roadmap for those ready to embark on their own journey of transformation.

By equipping themselves with the tools, skills, and partnerships needed to succeed, Malaysia’s SMEs are well-positioned to redefine their potential and contribute significantly to the nation’s economic growth.

Through similar forums, SAMENTA continues to be a catalyst for progress, offering Malaysian SMEs the support and knowledge they need to thrive. -- SME Magazine

KUALA LUMPUR: The prestigious Enterprise 50 (E50) Awards have highlighted the exceptional achievements of Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SME), showcasing their competitiveness and reliability in both local and global markets.

Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick, speaking at the E50 awards ceremony tonight, said the programme has had a significant impact on Malaysia's SME landscape.

He said since the programme's inception in 1997, a total of 763 companies have been recognised, with 67 of them successfully listed on capital markets and expanding their presence both locally and abroad.

"The E50 awards have created a benchmark for quality among local SMEs, showcasing their ability to compete at a global level.

"This recognition enables them to build strong partnerships, not only with major domestic companies but also with foreign investors," he said in his speech.

Also present was Deputy Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, SME Corp chairman Tan Sri Bernard Dompok and SME Corp chief executive officer Rizal Nainy.

This year's E50 was themed 'Celebrating the Spirit of Malaysian Entrepreneurship', honouring companies ranging from engineering consultants, dental specialist, and even 'nasi lemak' sellers.

Among the initiatives were an e-Invoicing session organised by Deloitte Malaysia, a credit assessment programme in collaboration with Bhd, and leadership transformation sessions with renowned business leaders.

"These initiatives provide a platform for E50 alumni to continuously develop their capabilities and expand their business networks," said Ewon.

Meanwhile, Ewon added that several strategic focus areas would be prioritised to further develop SMEs, especially those in the E50 alumni network.

These include enhancing SME participation in domestic and global supply chains, promoting the adoption of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices, and increasing the listing of SMEs on capital markets. -- New Straits Times

– BERNAMA

Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister, handed over the MyB Prosthetic Limb to its recipient, Mr. Ahmad Fadhil Rushdan Abdul Rahim, who is a person with disabilities

The Inclusive Ecosystem Programme for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (i-SEE) by SME Corp Malaysia, in collaboration with Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM), has driven MyB Innovation Sdn Bhd to develop a high-innovation prosthetic limb that enhances the quality of life for prosthetic users.

During the Malaysia Commercialisation Year (MCY) Summit 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) exchange between MyB Innovation Sdn. Bhd. and an Indonesian company, PT Yusuf Ortonesia Medika, took place on 12 August 2024, witnessed by the Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The MoU aims to commercialise the MyB Prosthetic Limb in the Indonesian market, with projected sales of RM1 million in the first year.

The MyB Prosthetic Limb features innovative characteristics such as bending up to 180˚, offering maximum comfort and flexibility for below-knee amputees. Unlike conventional prosthetic limbs, limited to standing and walking, this new prosthetic allows ankle movement, making it ideal for activities such as kneeling in prayer and yoga.

As a symbolic gesture of this collaboration, Anwar handed over a MyB Prosthetic Limb to its recipient, Ahmad Fadhil Rushdan Abdul Rahim, a person with physical disabilities (PWD). According to Fadhil, this innovation will have a significant impact on the quality of life of the community.

Already a prosthetic limb user, he expressed immense gratitude for this new prosthetic, which is lighter and makes daily activities, including performing prayers, easier. MyB Innovation Sdn. Bhd. was awarded a grant of RM191,859.00 under the i-SEE Programme by SME Corp. Malaysia through YIM.

According to Rizal Nainy, CEO of SME Corp. Malaysia, “The i-SEE Programme offers a maximum grant of RM200,000 for each innovator or entrepreneur. Through this programme, innovators or companies can not only expand their business opportunities regionally but also bring significant benefits to the inclusive community in Malaysia.

Since 2021, a total of 40 approvals with grants amounting to RM5.52 million have been awarded. The i-SEE Programme is a continuation of the High Impact Programme 6 (HIP 6) under the SME Master Plan (2012-2020), which is the Inclusive Innovation Programme implemented from 2016 to 2020, with 62 approvals worth RM13.84 million.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Sharmila Mohamed Salleh, CEO of Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM), said, “As a strategic partner, YIM has played a significant role as the implementing agency for the i-SEE programme, involving 40 innovators from 2021 to the present.

“It has successfully elevated skills in science, technology, and innovation, increased productivity, created job opportunities, raised incomes, and improved community well-being, especially for grant recipients, the local community, and target groups. According to the impact study conducted for the i-SEE project from 2021 to 2023, 19 companies that received funding successfully increased their annual revenue.”

The i-SEE Programme aims to encourage the development of product innovations that empower target groups such as the B40 income group, rural communities, youth, retirees, women, the elderly, and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The programme provides financial assistance to innovators or entrepreneurs to support the target groups and foster community transformation through mentorship and technical support.

Also in attendance were Chang Lih Kang, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Dato’ Haji Mohammad Yusof Apdal, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation and Dato’ Ts. Dr. Hj. Aminuddin bin Hassim, Secretary General of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI).

--Berita Harian

KUALA LUMPUR: Government agencies managing entrepreneurial and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) programmes have been asked to submit performance reports in two weeks orc risk losing their allocations.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said this was to ensure the initiatives were cost-effective and reduce wastage of government coffers.

"During the National SME Development Council (NSDC) meeting I chaired today, we have agreed that the agencies managing 40 such programmes, with a total allocation of RM32.8 billion, need to submit the report, or we will 'take it back'.

"We have seen positive developments among MSMEs as some micro-enterprises have upgraded to small enterprises, while the latter have expanded to medium enterprises," he told reporters after chairing the meeting at SME Corp headquarters today.

Zahid, who is also the rural and regional development minister, said the committee had agreed to mandatory reporting of related programmes at the ministerial, agencies and state government levels.

Up to mid-2024, he said, a total of 286 entrepreneurial initiatives and programmes, with a total allocation of RM15.06 billion were carried out under the SME Integrated Plan of Action (SMEIPA), a 10.8 per cent increase compared to last year.

He said the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) also reported MSME contributed 39.1 per cent or RM613.1 billion of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) last year, with a five per cent growth compared to the previous year.

On the 2025 Budget to be tabled in October, Zahid said the country's financial planning for the upcoming year would be pragmatic, focusing on creating a balanced budget.

He said his ministry would focus not only on infrastructure development in rural areas, but also on creating multiplier effects for the economy.

"A total of RM1 billion is allocated to some 19,000 villages, which allows the locals the opportunity to generate income.

"So, apart from people's wellbeing, we also emphasise on the economic development (in the different areas)."

SME Corp chief executive officer Rizal Nainy said the number of micro-enterprises in Malaysia had shrunk to 767,421 last year, compared to 923,667 in 2022, while small-enterprises and medium-enterprises had seen a 35.8 per cent and 7.9 per cent increase, respectively, within the same period.

-- Berita Harian

MSMEs in Malaysia scale up with 35.8% rise in small enterprises https://smecorp.gov.my/index.php/en/resources/2015-12-21-10-55-22/news/4986-msmes-in-malaysia-scale-up-with-35-8-rise-in-small-enterprises https://smecorp.gov.my/index.php/en/resources/2015-12-21-10-55-22/news/4986-msmes-in-malaysia-scale-up-with-35-8-rise-in-small-enterprises THERE has been a 16.9% reduction in the number of micro-sized enterprises, from 923,667 enterprises in 2022 to 767,421 last year.

On the other hand, small-sized enterprises increased by 35.8%, and medium-sized enterprises increased by 7.9%.

Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick said this indicates that Malaysian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have scaled up.

He noted that MSMEs achieved a growth of 5%, contributing RM613.1 billion in 2023 to Malaysia’s GDP, as reported by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).

“We (the ministry) together with its agencies especially SME Corp are highly committed to implement initiatives to boost MSMEs development in Malaysia further.

“These include encouraging MSMEs participation in the domestic and global supply chain, enhancing their capacity for internationalisation and providing inclusive financing opportunities,” he said during a press conference at the MSME 2023 overall contribution announcement today.

Ewon said the efforts to promote the adoption of environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices in business operations and to intensify entrepreneurship activities in Sabah and Sarawak will continue.

Moreover, he mentioned that MSMEs continued to outperform the overall economy, which expanded by only 3.6% last year.

“As a result, the contribution of MSMEs to the overall economy increased from 38.6% in 2022 to 39.1% in 2023.

“MSMEs demonstrated stronger performance, showcasing their resilience and vital role as key drivers of growth and stability,” he added.

Ewon said MSME exports totalled RM152.2 billion, expanding by 4.5% during the year (2022: 17.2%) despite a challenging external environment.

This led to an increase in MSMEs’ export contribution, from 10.6% in 2022 to 12.2% in 2023.

“The export growth momentum was largely driven by the ongoing expansion in the services sector, especially in tourism-related industries and the agriculture sector,” he said.

Ewon also said in today’s evolving business landscape, the productivity of businesses can be elevated if MSMEs invest in technology, talent and sustainable practices.

Also present were Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Deputy Minister Datuk Ramanan Ramakrishnan, SME Corp chairman Rizal Nainy and DOSM chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin. - The Malaysia Reserve

Strategic Collaboration between SME Corp. Malaysia, SSM to Enhance the Effectiveness of the TUBE Programme https://smecorp.gov.my/index.php/en/resources/2015-12-21-10-55-22/news/4982-strategic-collaboration-between-sme-corp-malaysia-ssm-to-enhance-the-effectiveness-of-the-tube-programme https://smecorp.gov.my/index.php/en/resources/2015-12-21-10-55-22/news/4982-strategic-collaboration-between-sme-corp-malaysia-ssm-to-enhance-the-effectiveness-of-the-tube-programme

SME Corp. Malaysia and the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will enhance the effectiveness of the implementation of the Tunas Usahawan Belia Bumiputera (TUBE) Programme. TUBE is a programme that aims to foster entrepreneurship and encourage Bumiputera youths aged between 18 and 30, to venture into business.

Through this MoU, the impact and success of the TUBE Programme in creating new entrepreneurs and its effectiveness in increasing the competitiveness and resilience of businesses can be measured more effectively. This strategic collaboration allows for the monitoring of TUBE Alumni's business status and continuing efforts to facilitate business registration of participants in the previous MoU, which was signed in 2017.

The signing ceremony, held at the SME Corp. Malaysia Headquarters, Platinum Sentral, Kuala Lumpur, further strengthened the cooperation between the two organisations towards facilitating a more conducive ecosystem and business environment, particularly business registration. The MoU, signed by Mr. Rizal bin Dato’ Nainy, Chief Executive Officer of SME Corp. Malaysia and Datuk Nor Azimah Abdul Aziz, Chief Executive Officer of SSM, will also enable an increase in business registration among Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and promote business formalisation, thus increasing MSMEs' contribution to the country's economy.

Commenting on the MoU, Mr. Rizal said SME Corp. Malaysia views this strategic partnership with SSM as crucial in assessing the impact or effectiveness of the TUBE programme, which has successfully trained a total of 8,543 Bumiputera youth entrepreneurs, with a total business grant disbursed amounting to RM120.96 million.

"In addition, I hope that the scope of this collaboration can be expanded to include other initiatives by SME Corp. Malaysia, mainly regarding the registration of MSMEs via the MSME Status, which is the basic criteria in determining eligibility for all programmes under SME Corp. Malaysia", added Mr. Rizal.

Meanwhile, Datuk Nor Azimah stated that the cooperation between SSM and SME Corp. Malaysia is expected to inculcate an entrepreneurial culture while encouraging Bumiputera youth to venture into business.

"SSM has implemented various initiatives to boost the business landscape in the country, including implementing the Pendaftaran Perniagaan Percuma Scheme (SPPP) and 1 OKU 1 Perniagaan (S1O1P) Scheme. Through this MoU, SSM will extend these initiatives to Bumiputera youth participating in the TUBE Programme. This strategic collaboration is an important step in ensuring that the business ecosystem in Malaysia is more inclusive and dynamic", she said.--The Edge Malaysia
