ASEAN SME Showcase and Conference 2015

Comprising 95% to 99% of companies registered in ASEAN member states, SMEs are considered to be vital to the economy of each individual country, and to the overall success of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) which will come into effect by the end of this year. As the Chairman of ASEAN during this critical period, Malaysia is proactively championing efforts to enhance regional SMEs and ensure that they are prepared for the challenges and opportunities of an integrated market.

The ASEAN SME Showcase & Conference 2015 (ASSC 2015) is a prime example of one such initiative. Taking place from the 26th to the 28th of May and themed One Business, One Community, this three-day event aims to strengthen cooperation and economic integration among ASEAN SMEs and comprises three components: the ASEAN SME Showcase, the ASEAN SME Conference, and the ASEAN SME Business XchanGe Platform.

While distinct from one another, the three components blend together to create the ideal SME enhancement platform. Thus, SMEs are able to highlight themselves, as well as, their products and services, share best practices with one another, and form agreements with potential partners.

Organising this landmark gathering is none other than SME Corp. Malaysia, which is the agency entrusted with coordinating national SME development. In addition, its credentials are strengthened as it has successfully organised the SME Annual Showcase (SMIDEX) for the last 17 years.

Showcasing Excellence

More than 500 exhibitors from across ASEAN, as well as, 10,000 trade visitors are expected to converge on more than 10,000 sq m of exhibition space at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) for the Showcase.

While regional SMEs are expected to make-up the bulk, MNCs and various government agencies from across ASEAN will also be present. After all, the Showcase not only offers SMEs the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities, it also gives those catering to the SME segment the avenue to present themselves to Southeast Asia’s top SMEs in one location.

Additionally, aside from ASEAN businesses, those from other countries such as Australia, China, India, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, the United States, Qatar, Turkey and the United Kingdom are expected to attend.

Matching Needs

Similarly, the ASEAN SME Business XchanGe Platform hopes to be the avenue through which SMEs in eight focus sectors can form links with their larger counterparts, including GLCs and MNCs. These sectors are aerospace, automotive & rail, oil & gas, retail, shipbuilding & repair, electrical & engineering, services and others.

Speaking at the soft launch of the ASSC 2015 in February, SME Corp. Malaysia Chairman, Tan Sri Ir. (Dr.) Mohamed Al Amin bin Hj. Abdul Majid explained, “The business matching session will facilitate links among SMEs in ASEAN, forge strategic business partnerships between them, as well as, spur the development of numerous business segments across the region."

Creating Capacity

In total, RM400m in potential sales have been targeted for ASSC 2015. Aside from the business matching session, equally important, as part of the Conference segment, six sessions have been scheduled, including topics dealing with the role of SMEs in ASEAN, using technology to empower SMEs, and encouraging entrepreneurship among the youth.

The capacity-building feature which is reflected in the Conference shows that the event aims to help SMEs improve their processes so that they will be more resilient and able to compete at a global level.

Both the Showcase and Business XchanGe Platform will take place throughout the duration of the three days, while the Conference will be conducted on the second and third days. As Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Dato' Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak said on Malaysia assuming the Chairmanship of ASEAN, “2015 (is) a historic date which will see the establishment of the ASEAN Community. It is the culmination of a five-decade long effort of region-building.” As the backbone of the economy in the region, SMEs have to be on the ball in this new environment, and the ASEAN SME Showcase & Conference 2015 will provide them with the necessary tools.

“In our effort to develop ASEAN as an economic community, as Chair next year, we will emphasise the role of SMEs in ASEAN. Some 95% to 99% of the business establishments in ASEAN are SMEs by nature, so it is vital that we take advantage of ASEAN as a single platform.” - Dato' Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia at the 16th National SME Development Council Meeting, Putrajaya, 4 July 2014
