Proactive learning critical for SMEs’ success

PETALING JAYA: It is critical for any business to be open to continuous learning and seek improvement, especially if the resources are readily available in the market.

When it comes to small and medium enterprises (SMEs), a small number remains resistant to change and prefers to maintain the “old way of doing things” for a variety of reasons such as misconceptions and the lack of knowledge or familiarity with the subject matter.

The upcoming SME Thought Leadership Tea Talk #3, which will take place on Oct 15 at Menara Star in Petaling Jaya, will be focusing on leveraging existing resources made available by industry players to enhance business capabilities and performance.

The half-day event will start at 9am and end by 12 noon.

Credit Guarantee Corporation Bhd (CGC) business division marketing and sales senior vice-president Wong Keet Loong, who will be attending a sharing session titled “Exploring Business Advisory Services”, will be speaking on the need for such services and its benefits during the talk.

The objective of business advisory services is typically to ensure that companies are well-positioned for growth, by bringing in an adviser to identify the business’ strengths and weaknesses and provide a solution that would address the problematic areas expediently.

Wong, who oversees three departments under CGC’s marketing and sales, largely deals with conventional financial institutions, SME advisory and marketing, as well as branch sales management.

The banking veteran has 20 years of experience under his belt.

Starting off with a career in audit, he soon ventured into marketing and sales in business and consumer banking, which then led to him managing aspects such as sales performance, overall profitability and business growth, resource planning and business change management in a large financial institution here.

Besides that, participants will also be able to hear from SME Corporation Malaysia corporate planning and coordination head Suraini Mohamad Sulaiman, who will be speaking on the topic of capability, competency and performance enhancement for competitiveness.

SMEs and entrepreneurs will also be given time to mingle and network to discuss potential collaborations or partnerships or keep up to date on current developments in business.

Tea Talk #3 will be held from 9am to 12 noon. Admission is RM30 for two pax. Those interested can register at http://bit.ly/2lvHggJ.

Created as a platform for dialogue and learning within the business fraternity, the SME Thought Leadership series is aimed at dissecting emerging business issues and identifying opportunities that can be leveraged to grow businesses.
